Are you struggling to maintain a successful social media marketing presence? Not sure if your approach is generating the right results? Read on for 4 social media marketing traps that you need to avoid:

1.       Treating all platforms the same

It’s important to note that each social media platform plays a different role and possesses its own unique purpose. By treating all platforms the same, you are essentially creating a sense of detachment and depersonalisation in each post that you publish. This sends out a negative message about your brand, encouraging a disconnection between your brand and your audience.

Instead, use each platform individually, adopting the right approach on a per platform basis. For instance, Facebook and Twitter do not like brands to overuse hashtags (one or two is sufficient), whilst Instagram encourages the use of numerous hashtags. Popular Facebook posts combine images with content while Pinterest is only recommended if you have plenty of high-quality images that you can post.

2.       Poor engagement

Since social media is all about being social, one of the biggest traps you can fall into is poor engagement. If you do not engage with your followers by responding to questions, comments and feedback, you will be causing long-lasting damage to your brand that is detrimental to your brand. Even if a client thanks you for a service, take a moment to accept their thanks with a simple 'you're welcome' or other straightforward comment.

On the other hand, by regularly responding to feedback and getting a conversation going, you will be boosting brand loyalty and generating a stronger relationship with your followers, which will in turn boost their chances of choosing your brand over another.

3.       Ignoring your account

There is simply no point in having a social media account if you do not have an active presence. You need to spend time and energy building your followers and keeping those followers engaged. Even during the typically quieter periods, you need to keep the activity going in order to reach your goals.

With that being said, do not overwhelm your followers with endless posts. Strike the right balance by posting content between one and three times per day in the most creative way possible.

4.       Selling too hard

As previously mentioned, social media platforms are a place to engage with your followers and get a conversation going. Although your ultimate intention is to sell your products or services, this needs to be done in the most subtle way possible because social media is all about providing value to your followers. As such, there is no point in using every opportunity to promote your products or services; instead, you need to find ways to keep your followers interested in your brand and entertained. Only them can you embed promotional content into your social posts. Keep promotional content subtle in order to achieve more revenue from your business.
